Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT) is a not-for-profit organization of parents and professionals committed to improving the education, treatment, and care of people with autism. Since autism was first identified, there has been a long history of failed treatments and fads, levied on vulnerable individuals as well as on their families. From the scandal of the refrigerator mother theory, to the ongoing parade of miracle cures and magical breakthroughs, history has been dominated by improbable theories about causation and treatments. Many of these treatments have been too quickly adopted by professionals, too readily sensationalized by the media, and too hastily embraced by hopeful consumers well before supporting evidence or reasonable probability existed for their effectiveness or safety. Since ASAT was established in 1998, it has been their goal to work toward adopting higher standards of accountability for the care, education and treatment of all individuals with autism.
The Autism SIG chartered by the Association for Behavior Analysis International Brings together those individuals who specialize in or have an interest in the application of behavior analysis to the education and treatment of autism across the lifespan. The Autism SIG has three primary purposes: 1) To promote behavior analytic research and the exchange of scientific information in the area of autism treatment; 2) To advocate for and promote high standards in the application of behavior analytic treatments; and 3) To support consumers of ABA services.

Clinic of Dr. Vincent Carbone, BCBA: The Clinic's mission is to provide evidence-based behavior analytic services to learners with autism and other developmental disabilities through direct services and training of family members and educators. They accomplish this by insuring that the learner’s progress occurs through the arrangement of teaching environments which are mostly positive and arranged to ultimately allow the learner to continue to develop language and other skills in typical community and family settings. Includes a video presentation of Dr. Carbone.
Website of Dr. Mark Sundberg, BCBA: Primary goal of his website is to provide information on B.F. Skinner’s (1957) analysis of language. Recently, Skinner’s work has experienced wide-spread use for language assessment and intervention for children with autism and other developmentally disabilities. Dr. Sundberg is the co-author of Teaching Language to Children with Autism and Developmental Delays and the author of The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (The VB-MAPP), a preferred assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skill tracking system that is designed for children with autism, and other individuals who demonstrate language delays. The VB-MAPP is based on B.F. Skinner’s (1957) analysis of verbal behavior, established developmental milestones, and research from the field of behavior analysis. The VB-MAPP has been field-tested with children with autism, children with other developmental disabilities, and typically developing children. The VB-MAPP is scheduled for publication in the Summer 2008.
Clinic and School of Dr. Jim Partington, BCBA: The Clinic's mission is to provide high-quality, effective interventions for children with disabilities and their parents as well as provide training to other professionals in the delivery of these services. Procedures are derived from the literature of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and based on the works of B.F. Skinner and other prominent well published behavior analysts. In addition to targeting an increase in language skills, also work diligently to reduce any excessive problem behaviors the children may be exhibiting by teaching the child’s parents and teachers how to reduce and prevent these behaviors while simultaneously teaching appropriate alternative behaviors. EO Inc. offers supervision programs for those seeking their certification in applied behavior analysis or for those who are already board certified and are seeking to further their skill set with supervision from experts in the field.
VB SIG of ABAI: This SIG is dedicated to the study of "language" from a behavior analytic point of view. Behavior Analysts attempt to study humans and nonhumans as objectively as possible, thus the focus on observable behaviors, as well as antecedents and consequences of those behaviors. The term "verbal behavior" was coined by Skinner (1957)- see that text for an in-depth analysis of language from a behavioral perspective.
Verbal Behavior Wiki: Goal is to try and collect some of the info and resources to answer some common FAQs about including Skinner's Analysis of Verbal Behavior in an ABA treatment program for a child with autism, and to provide a pointer to books, videos, consultants, journal articles, and other helpful information.

By Dr. Jim Partington, BCBA: To help an individual with autism learn critical new skills and willingly participate in social interactions, a parent or educator needs to know how to capture the child’s motivation. Carbone Clinic Multimedia: IT video - provides an illustration of discrete trial training with a learner with autism within an ABA program. The viewer will note that procedures designed to increase the learner’s motivation to respond are being implemented. These procedures include a brisk pace of instruction, a high rate of correct responding through errorless teaching, the mixing and varying of tasks, and the interspersal of a high rate of mastery skills to targets. Learners who receive individualized one-on-one instruction may spend from 15 minutes to 30 minutes per hour in this type of learning activity. NET video -provides an illustration of Natural Environment Teaching with a young child with autism. This type of learning activity has become a recognized component of most ABA programs for children with autism. This program component is designed to transfer skills acquired in other learning activities to the naturally occurring settings experienced by most children. In addition, many skills such as manding (requesting) are best taught in environments that have naturally occurring reinforcing value for the learner.

SRA/McGraw Hill's Direction Instruction Programs: Direct Instruction, developed by Siegfried "Zig" Engelmann through 35 years of study, contains all the elements of a well-designed program: explicit instructional strategies, coordinated instructional sequences, ample practice opportunities for a good balance between skills instruction and literature, and aligned student materials. Direct Instruction (DI) is an approach that works even when all other programs fail. Pioneered by Professor Siegfried Engelmann in the 1960s, Direct Instruction (DI) is a method of instruction that is explicit, intensive, and teacher-directed. Direct Instruction (DI) is a highly structured approach to instruction designed to accelerate the learning of at-risk students. Previously known as the DISTAR (Direct Instruction Systems for Teaching Arithmetic and Reading) program and Project Follow Through, DI is based on the theory that learning is maximized when instructional presentations are clear, likely misinterpretations are eliminated, and generalizations are facilitated. Classroom teachers learn how to define tasks clearly, build toward more-complex concepts, use interactive lessons with large and small groups, use frequent praise for responses, and recognize and correct errors immediately. To maximize time spent on tasks, students are placed in instructional groups based on similar performance, and grouping may take place across classes and grades. The Direct Instruction approach teaches children increasingly complex skills and strategies by using certain principles. First, all concepts are broken into sub-skills (small component skills that are taught one by one). Secondly, each skill is taught so that students fully understand it. Then, each is practiced until it is completely mastered. In this way, students learn to generalize and apply strategies that have been taught in real-life situations.
